1．would主要用构成过去将来时(可用于各个人称)：
I knew you would agree．
我知道你会同意的。
I thought they would be waiting for us．
我以为他们会等我们的。
She asked if I would help.
她问我是否会帮忙。
He asked if I would join them．
他问我要不要参加他们的活动。
I told her that we would meet at the station．
我告诉她我们将在车站碰头。
They told me that they probably wouldn't come.
他们对我说他们多半不会来。
would常可紧缩为“’d”：
I thought he’d be sleeping．我以为他会在睡觉的。
would not可紧缩为wouldn’t：
I thought you wouldn’t come．我还以为你不会来的哩。
2．would用于条件句，表示假想的情况(可用于各个人称,带出想象的结果） ：
I would do it if I could．
要是我有能力我是会这样做的。
If I were you，I wouldn’t agree.
我要是你我不会同意。
If they had left earlier．they would have caught the train
他们要是动身早一点就赶上火车了。
1 would have refused if he had asked me.
如果他问我我是会拒绝的。
She'd look better with shorter hair.
她留短发会显得好看些。
If you went to see him, he would be delighted.
倘若你去看望他，他会高兴的。
Hurry up! It would be a shame to miss the beginning of the play.
快点儿！要是错过这出戏的开场就太可惜了。
She'd be a fool to accept it (= if she accepted) .
她倘若接受，那她就是个傻瓜。
3．would用来表示过去习惯性动作或倾向，（带出过去常见的情况）总是，老是 ；：
Occasionally he would come to see us．
他偶尔会来看望我们。
Every afternoon they would play together．
他们每天下午都在一起玩。
Now and then a bird Would call．
时不时有鸟叫。
The wound wouldn’t heal．
伤口老不能愈合。
也可以表（带出一贯的行为）总是，爱，好，就 ;
‘She said it was your fault.’ ‘Well, she would say that , wouldn't she? She's never liked me.’
“她说这是你的错。”“唉，她总是这么说，不是吗？她从来就没有喜欢过我。”
4．would用在日常生活中，用来提出客气的请求、看法、建议、邀请、忠告等，使口气显得更婉转：
I’d like a ticket to Hangzhou．
我想买一张到杭州的票。
London wouldn’t suit her．
伦敦对她不合适。（比won’t婉转)
Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?
你今晚愿意和我一道吃晚饭吗?
You’d like some tea，wouldn’t you?
你想喝点茶是吧?
Would you mind leaving us alone for a few minutes?
你不介意让我们单独待一会吧？
Would you open the door for me, please?
请你给我开门好吗？
Would you like a sandwich?
您来一个三明治好吗？
Would you have dinner with me on Friday?
请你星期五和我一起用餐好吗？
I wouldn't have any more to drink, if I were you .
我要是你的话，我就不会再喝酒了。
5．(用于过去、现在情况)表示“愿意”(相当于will的过去式)：
No matter what happened，he would not say a word．
卅i管发生什么情况他一句话也不肯说。
He would never enter that house again.
他再也不愿进那个家。
当然也可以表示不愿意:
She wouldn't change it, even though she knew it was wrong.
尽管她知道这错了，她也不肯改变。
My car wouldn't start this morning.
今天早晨我的汽车怎么也发动不起来。
I'd love a coffee.
我想喝杯咖啡。
I'd be only too glad to help.
我非常愿意帮忙。
I'd hate you to think I was criticizing you.
我可不愿意让你认为我是在批评你。
I'd rather come with you.
我倒愿意和你一起去。
I'd rather you came with us.
我倒愿意你和我们一块儿去。
6．would也可表示猜测：
I would imagine the job will take about two days.
我猜想这工作大概需要两天左右的时间吧。
I'd say he was about fifty.
我猜他五十岁上下。
It was half seven; her mother would be annoyed because he was so late.
7点半了，他到得这么晚，她母亲一定会生气的。
That would have been Della's car
那应该是德拉的车。
I thought you would have finished this by now.
我想你现在已经干完了。
The person you mentioned would be your father.
你捉到的那人想必是你父亲。
7. （表示可能发生的事情没有发生，是因为之前另一件事没有发生）就会 :
If I had seen the advertisement in time I would have applied for the job.
我要是及时看到了这则广告，我就应聘那份工作了。
They would never have met if she hadn't gone to Emma's party.
她如果不去参加埃玛的聚会，他们就永远不会相会。
8. would that…
（用以表示强烈的愿望）
Would that he had lived to see it.
他要是能活到看见这该多好哇。
Would that he could have listened to his father.
他要是听了他父亲的话就好了。
9.广泛用于虚拟语气：
If I were you I would simply ring your friend's bell and ask for your bike back
如果我是你，我就会直接去按你朋友的门铃，把自行车要回来。
It would be wrong to suggest that police officers were not annoyed by acts of indecency
要是认为警官对粗鄙行为不气不恼，那可就错了。
