The North Wind And The Sun
北风和太阳
A dispute arose between the North wind and the Sun, each claiming that he was stronger than the other. At last they agreed to try their powers upon a traveller, to see which could soonest strip him of his cloak. The North wind had the first try, and Gathering up all his force for the attack, he came whirling furiously down upon the man, and caught up his cloak as though he would wrest it from him by one single effort, but the harder he blew, the more closely the man wrapped it round himself. Then the Turn of the Sun. At first he beamed gently upon the traveller, who soon unclasped his cloak and walked on with it hanging loosely about his shoulders, then he shone forth in his full strength, and the man, before he had gone many steps, was glad to throw his cloak right off and complete his journey more lightly clad.
Persuasion is better than force.
北风和太阳之间起了争执，他们都认为自己比对方强大。最后，他们两个决定比一比，看谁能让一个路人最快脱掉斗篷。北风先开始，他聚集起所有的力量发动攻击，呼啸着袭向那个人，想凭借一己之力将他的斗篷扯下来。但是他吹得越用力，那个人把斗篷裹得就越紧。然后轮到太阳出手了。起初他只是柔和地照着路人，路人很快解开了斗篷，任斗篷松松垮垮的搭在肩上。最后太阳开始发威，光芒四射，路人没走几步便将斗篷脱了下来，轻装上路。
劝说比武力更有效。
我们来学习一下这则故事中的地道表达：
1/ dispute v. 争执，纠纷
这是一个动词，如果想要说两人间起了争执，就要用dispute between A and B，那么北风和太阳之间起了争执，就是dispute between the North wind and the Sun.
2/ claim v. 声称，宣称，断言
这个动词用起来较正式，更加口语化的表达是say。
3/ have the first try 第一次尝试
这个词组里有个固定搭配have a try，表示尝试，努力。The first表示第一。所以have the first try 就是第一次尝试的意思了。
4/ gather up v. 收集起。。。
Gather表示聚集，召集，收集。具体收集什么东西要放在gather up后面，比如，聚集起全部力量，就是gather up all the force.
5/ the more..., the more...越。。就越。。
这是一个非常常用的搭配，前半句用比较级，表示越。。。，后半句也用比较级，表示就越。。，比如，越高越好，the taller, the better. 越舒适就越贵，the more comfortable, the more expensive。那么，吹得越用力，那个人把斗篷裹得越紧，就是the harder he blows, the more closely the man wrap it round himself.
6/ the turn of someone 轮到某人
Turn在这里表示轮到的机会，那么具体轮到谁就要把这个人放在the turn of的后面，比如，轮到太阳了，就是the turn of the Sun.
7/ complete v. 完成
这是个动词，具体要完成什么事情，要放在complete的后面，比如，完成这趟旅程，complete the journey。
8/ persuasion n. 说服，劝说，劝导
这是一个名词，它的动词形式是persuade, 劝导某人做某事，persuade somebody to do something.
9/ force n. 暴力，武力，力量
这个词做名词表示力量，作动词表示强迫，迫使，强迫某人做某事，就是force somebody to do something，比如，强迫游客离开，force visitors to leave.
明白了这些单词的含义，让我们再来听一遍这则寓言故事吧。
